On the night of January 7, 2023, at around 8:31, Memphis Fire Department received a Police call requesting assistance for a motorist who wa pepper sprayed. At 8:41, engine number 55 reached the scene with EMT-basic Robert Long, EMT-advanced JaMichael Sandridge, and driver/Lieutenant Michelle Whitaker.

Upon reaching the scene, EMTs saw Tyre sitting on the ground next to a vehicle. The young father was distressed and severely wounded, but none of the first responders made any effort to provide him with medical assistance and called an ambulance for him.

About 9 to 10 minutes later, the ambulance arrived, but the damage was already done. At the hospital, Nichols fought for three days for his life but could not survive.

Clearly, the irresponsible behavior of both police officers and medical technicians took the life of an innocent young guy. Memphis Police Department took quick action and fired all the cops responsible for Tyre’s death, but it took more than 3 weeks for Fire Department to recognize the mistake of its employees.
